The Giant, a Bike and the Golden Gate Bridge

I spent the better part of the past week with a delegation from Harrisonburg studying bike culture and infrastructure in Davis, Sacramento and San Francisco, CA. Click here for the blog from that trip. The culminating event was a bike trip across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and a ferry ride back to San Francisco. Thanks to our samazingq host Robb Davis and terrific H-burg travel companions. Stay tuned for a short documentary about the experience in late May.

There were some very inspiring direct actions by bikers, at the anti Iraq War demonstrations and when the Republicans had their convention in NYC in 2004. My nephew rode in one, got arrested and put in one of the holding pens on the Hudson River piers.
The last time I was in Seville, I never got in a car, just used the public curbside commuter bikes. I watched the repair crews fixing them in the morning. There are things they just do better in Europe.

  2. Thanks, Will! What the delegation discovered is how liberating the bikes can be – I did tv production by bike for 5 days and felt absolutely wonderful. (of course colleague Robb Davis who was dragging my gear from his bike trailer may have another story!) What really rang smart for me was the bike racks on the train – as the H-Burg mayor Kai Degner pointed out – wouldn’t it be great if we could having biking/pub transport all over the Shenandoah Valley!! Woooaaww!

Here’s the link from the train:
